Flooding on footpath due to dimpled crossing pad below road surface

Reported anonymously at 10:29, Thu 23 June 2022

“Fix My Street” Report – BS6 7US Flooding on the dimpled crossing footpath at the junction of Northumbria Road and Howard Road. The pedestrian BS6 7US crossing point is situated below the road level and during times of heavy rain, surface waters flowing down North View Road, also join the water flow from Northumbria Drive before the enlarged water flow reaches the lowered pedestrian crossing. There is a single drain in the gutter before the crossing point. However, this drain cannot divert the volume of fast flowing rainwater and therefore the water leaves the gutter and enters the Howard Road footpath, rather than follow the path of the gutter and into additional drains in Howard Road. The above situation is illustrated by the attached photos:- 1. A location photo of the entrance to Howard Road, showing the pedestrian crossing at the junction of Howard Road and Northumbria Drive and also the location of the spirit level which is shown as a close up in the additional photo. 2. The spirit level photo shows that the dimpled pedestrian platform is at a lower level than the gutter. It seems that the solutions may include:- • a large deep rainwater gully before the dimpled pedestrian platform, in order to capture heavy volumes of rainwater. • An elevated mound of McAdam around the dropped pedestrian kerb, in order to prevent a torrent of rainwater flowing down the footpath, which is dangerous to pedestrians during freezing conditions.
