Compensation for car damage

Reported anonymously at 10:11, Tue 1 November 2016

On Friday 21st October, I drove from my home in Thornbury, South Glos, to work in Avonmouth, Bristol, via Severn Road. Near Ableton Lane, I drove over deep holes in the road, which were not readily apparent due to them being full of rainwater and leaves. There was immediately a loud bang and a shudder through the car. I limped to the nearest safe place to stop the car which was difficult as the car was pulling severely to the right. The tyre looked as though it was deflating, so I pumped it up and drove slowly and carefully to Tyres Direct in Avonmouth. After having inspected the car, they advised me that the front nearside wheel was badly damaged and to get it seen by an appropriate professional. They replaced the wheel, pumped up the tyre and added extra sealant to get me home safely. I then took the car to Thornbury Motors who said the damage to the wheel was irreparable and the two nearside tyres where badly shredded beyond repair. As that damage occurred immediately after driving over the holes, it is obvious that the damage to the car was a result of these holes in the road. I have taken a photo of the holes in the road, one showing its sharp vertical sides but not fully showing its depth due to the rainwater and leaves which I could not remove whilst dodging oncoming traffic . I have since noticed that the Council was obviously aware of the poor condition of that part of the road, as it has now been repaired!!
