Lane Guides on Roundabout Inconsistent with written markings (M32 Junction 2 / B4469)
Reported in the Road Signage category by Max Taylor at 23:33, Tue 13 June 2017
Sent to Bristol City Council 12 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 1054109.
The lines demarcating lanes when approaching the M32 Northbound entry slip lane are not consistent with the road markings applied prior to the traffic lights controlling traffic on the roundabout. Either the "M32(N)" marking needs to be removed from the middle lane and the arrow replaced with right turn only, or the trajectory of the markings guiding the left lane to the exit should be modified. I have experienced a near miss at this location after approaching the roundabout from the east on Muller Road. The lane guidance markings appear to be relatively recent (they don't appear on streetview). Hopefully the attached sketch illustrates the problem. Left image reflect current configuration, right image shows revised lane guides.

This was a scheme that was initially funded by the local neighbourhood partnership. The lining has not been finished due initially to bad weather and then because the traffic management for the lining and signage work would clash with essential works taking place on the M32. When we have a gap in the other works' schedules we will get the lining completed.

Although lane guides are now present, there is still a lane clash between the Easton lane and M32 right hand lane. I have experienced 2 near misses and witnessed far more. The Easton lane is the left hand M32 lane and is turning right, whereas the right hand M32 lane is turning left. Evidently they cross one another. The lane demarcations indicate that the right hand M32 lane requires a mandatory lane change whereas the Easton lane does not. Furthermore the Easton lane later clashes with the fishponds lane.
Clashes shown on photo 1 and suggested changes on photo 2.

In addition to the points already raised, this roundabout also has discrepancies leading on to it from the north-bound slip road off the M32. The original signage was for some reason retained (see photos 1 and 2). One sign appears to have been painted over but not the other. The signs DO NOT match the directional markings painted on the tarmac when the roundabout was re-lined.
The middle lane on the slip road is marked for Stapleton/M32 (i.e. on the tarmac) and the right-hand lane is marked for Fishponds/M32. With reference to the aerial view, I've had numerous near misses where traffic in both lanes seeks to enter the middle lane on the roundabout (i.e. the red and blue lines converging, near where the star is). Some traffic seems to be using the roundabout as per the original retained signage, which has resulted in a clear ambiguity as to which lane Fishponds-bound traffic should be in (i.e. the tarmac says the RHL but the old signage says middle or RHLs).
Moreover, the dashed lining is not intuitive as to lane direction, as it is on most other roundabouts. I.e. normally the dashes guide traffic around and they only need to be crossed if one is obviously travelling across them from a wholly different direction. With this roundabout, one needs to cross them as a matter of course, to seek to comply with the directional signage on the tarmac.
To my mind the following should happen: (1) the roundabout should be subject to an overall review/re-lining to make it more intuitive from all directions; and (2) the original signage on the slip road should be replaced.
As things are at present, BCC would have a clear liability in the event of a collision in my view.
