Footpath/cyclepath confusion
Reported in the Road Signage category by Charles Beaton at 12:08, Sun 7 October 2018

New surfacing is welcome. However, this new surfacing is confusing for the pedestrian. I presume it’s supposed to be shared use. In the first pic looking west, you’ll see the clear bicycle user symbols on the path, which suggest to the bicycle user that it’s a cyclepath. Now look at the second pic, looking east, and you’ll see that it looks like a footpath. If you’re seeking to separate the pedestrian and cycle traffic across the junction you need to indicate where the pedestrian should walk. If you’re not separating pedestrians from pedestrians, you must remove the bicycle signs.

As well as the confusion between cyclists and pedestrians, there is also confusion between motorists and pedestrians. The road markings suggest motorists should give way to those crossing the road, but because it is not a zebra crossing, many motorists do not give way. I was nearly hit by a car this evening. Perhaps I was wrong to assume a car should give way but it’s just not clear enough. Please put a zebra crossing here so everyone knows who has right of way.

I received no explanation for the confusion created by the infrastructure installed by the local authority and nothing has changed since my original report.
