Dangerous crossing for pedestrians - crossing required
Reported in the General Highways Enquiry category anonymously at 15:42, Thu 6 February 2020
Sent to Bristol City Council 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 1983028.
The top of Tower Hill is extremely dangerous for pedestrians for cross. The area has dropped kerbs, presumably to make access easier for cyclists, with the resultant blurring of where the carriageway ends and the pavement begins. There is a slight speed bump in the carriageway, which has white triangles painted on it to mark it, but no crossing like a zebra crossing. Cars approach from the direction of Old Market and do not signal their intent to go down Tower Hill or Lower Castle Street - often changing lane at the last minute. Because there is no clear priority between cars vs cyclists vs pedestrians there is often conflict with pedestrians having to run out of the way. Car drivers see no marked crossing, so drive at the pedestrians. For pedestrians the road and pavement just merge (no kerb), and with the marked speed bump many assume that it is crossing - which it is not. By putting a clearly marked zebra crossing here the safety would be greatly improved. There would be a clear crossing point, and no ambiguity.
