Email Mon 03/02/2020 Hello,
I am writing to request a few minor improvements to the cycle infrastructure maintenance that will significantly improve the safety and accessibility of the cycling in Bristol.
I'm both a car driver and a cyclist but prefer to commute the 11 miles from Bedminster to Bradley Stoke on the Concorde way cycle path, whatever the weather.
On 21st January it was forecast -1°c and freezing fog as I set off cautiously on my commute. The roads were mostly fine but turn onto a cycle path and you'll loose your footing and risk serious injury. Despite cycling very slowly and carefully I came off twice in the following places were it is particularly bad:
Bridge over M32 J3 Lower Ashley Road Interchange Entire section between Mina Road and Muller Road
I fear I was not the only one to have fallen and feel lucky to have finished my journey with only a few cuts and bruises. This could have been avoided with just a bit of grit.
I've been in contact with Councillor Gill Kirk (CC'd) to raise my concerns and had the current policy confirmed. The policy being not to pro-actively grit any of Bristol's cycling infrastructure before forecast freezes, and to only grit a very small amount of the infrastructure (parts of Bristol/Bath) after severe weather. This policy makes Bristol cycling infrastructure dangerously unreliable during winter months.
Can you consider proactively gritting at least the major cycling routes in Bristol (Concorde way, Bristol / Bath etc)?
In addition to the lack of proactive gritting, there aren't even grit bins close to the cycle paths for residents to use. Can the council review the cycling infrastructure and ensure that all routes have at least some provision?
Cycling has a huge potential to improve the health and wellbeing of residents, and increase the economic prosperity of our cities. Especially in a city like Bristol that is regularly frozen in gridlock and choked by traffic fumes. The council need to continue to invest in cycling infrastructure, segregated cycle lanes, and ongoing maintenance so that it is accessible to all. Best regards
