Unsatisfactory road resurfacing
Reported in the General Highways Enquiry category anonymously at 17:29, Fri 24 July 2020
Sent to Bristol City Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 2215348.
Our road was resurfaced on 21st July but has not been done to a good standard. The road was not rollered after being resurfaced resulting in an extremely bumpy finish and significant tyre marks left by the truck. Parts of the original road are also showing through (see photos)

To add to this issue, raised by a neighbour, having come back to the street after being away whilst the work has been done, not only cosmetically does it look tatty and not finished well, the uneven lumpy surface is worse that before and an increased hazard to our children. With playing out front being more important than ever, given the current solution, there is no way our children can rollerblade or skateboard etc, and if they were to fall, they'd like incur a much worse cut/graze compared to what was there before. This is a shame given the street has petitioned for some years to get this road resurfaced.

As another resident of Longford Avenue I also agree with the reported issues. It’s so rough to touch our children cannot play out there. Bit of a shame the job seems so unfinished after waiting so long for it to get resurfaced.

We also live in longford Avenue and we are not happy with the quality of the resurface. It seems the job has not been completed and I doubt it will last long. It is not safe for any of our children and our residents using mobility scooters. We have been waiting a couple of years to have the resurface and the results are really not satisfactory. If it is not fixed the council would need to spend further tax payer money to re-do the job; something that should have done properly from the beginning.

Really disappointed with the resurfacing of Longford Avenue, especially after such a long wait. I have lived here since 2006 and have never seen this end of the street (.the turning circle and adjacent section of road) look so bad. What was a safe surface on this small street for the the 13 primary school aged children to play on under lockdown, is now a lumpy mess and I can already see where the surface will diminish unevenly over time because of poor covering. Really disappointing.

As another resident of Longford Avenue, I am very disappointed with the finish of the road surface which we have long awaited as a street. We have petitioned over several years to get this done and I’m quite surprised by the quality of work done. I had thought that any resurfacing would be better than what we initially had, but now I’m questioning whether the surface we had before was actually better. It seems rushed and messy. It’s a shame that the kids won’t be able to use this space now for playing out. We’d appreciate anything that can be done to improve the quality of the finish. Thank you

A couple neighbours spoke to the contractor responsible for laying the road whilst he was out inspecting it today. He claimed that this should have been rolled out by on the day of doing the job, but that the roller was broken. His response was that it'll flatten over time as cars drive over it; even though he also added that bringing a roller out now would have no impact at this point. Even if cars did have any impact, they typically drive over the same areas and will not result in a consistent finish. Please can someone from the council inspect this.

The latest pictures above show the rollers' visit in an attempt to flatten out the tatty finish. The roller was present for about 5 minutes and the finish looks no different. Tyres marks from the road sweeper still stand out badly and the road still looks and is just as patchy and uneven as before. Also, cars are present in the road, so the roller wasn't able to do a complete job. As residents have said before, we petitioned to have the road resurfaced for some years and it's a disappointment to us all that this job went ahead when the proper/required tools were not available on the day; the roller for instance. If the roller had been present, we're sure this would have looked great and given a good finish, unlike what has dried and bedding in already and is now worse than before.

Attaching further pictures that in the streets opinion don’t reflect the expected quality of a road just having been resurfaced

The council came to roll the road but it has naturally made no difference as the surface was already dry. There was no notice on this so they had to use the machine around the parked cars. The surface remains identical to how it was before. Very unsatisfactory result ☹

In addition to the above comments, this is the road as of this weekend. It is still very much unsatisfactory and in worse condition that before it was done, which is a big shame, particularly as it now creates more risk with children playing out from grit and being uneven. The poor condition is most notable in dry conditions. I am concerned to see patching up work continuing, my hope is that the council follows this up with their contractors to get it redone/reworked.

Great to see the road sweeper coming out again, but it feels like a wasted effort when it’s not loose grit that’s the problem but uneven and patchy finish; and with parked cars around, it’s not touching all the road anyhow.
