Bushes obstructing road - drivers using wrong carriageway

Reported in the Obstruction category anonymously at 11:21, Thu 20 August 2020

Sent to Bristol City Council 5 minutes later

The bushes/shrubs on the allotment-side of this portion of Charlton Road are impinging so much on the road that most vehicles - including the buses - are being forced to drive slightly straddling the two carriageways of this already narrow road stretch, to avoid damaging the vehicles.

The other day, when turning left out from Charlton Mead Drive, I was almost hit by another car who was driving partly along my right of way.

Please investigate this URGENTLY; there is a genuine danger here of road traffic incidents, on a route frequently used by pedestrians as well. This cannot afford a council response of many months while the shrubs are still growing!

This has been an issue now for several months owing to the favorable weather for the plant, but each time I've returned home I've forgotten to report it - my apologies.

(I may re-report this with photos when I remember to walk round and take some - but please trust my report in the meantime.)

Over a month later still no hedge work done. Bushes expanding. With buses driving down this road it leaves no option but scrapping along bushes. I pulled over to take picture - as you can see down to max 1.5 lanes width now. Seriously dangerous

  • Is anyone actually dealing with this? Hello Bristol City Council? Are you either ignorant or incompetent?

I've had a few more instances of being nearly hit as I turned left fron Charlton Mead Drive onto Charlton Road. I've also just been making the return journey, and noticed that buses hang back and flash each other through that part as they know they can't fit through together - as I followed the nunber 2a bus just now, it was straddling the opposing lane by a good 4 feet! Now bloody well do something about this!! I'll try the MP and Bristol Post too, they do love a good tabloid story.

  • For information of anyone else interested in this, the Council tweeted me: "Hi Gregory, I've chased this up with the team and since the bushes are coming from the allotment side of the road they don't fall under our jurisdiction sadly. Sorry that we couldn't be more help"...

  • The allotments belong to Bristol City Council so how can the Council say not their responsibility?

  • Hahaha I have no idea, I responded to thset effect! I'll put it down to incompetence, or ignorance, or both.

  • I've now informed Avon & Somerset Police because of the risk of some sort of crash along there - they'll chase up with the council.

  • Well, thank you council, it looks like the bushes were finally trimmed, just three months after the issue was raised! It's a lot better now, but I'm still not convinced I would say it is FIXED, because it's still fairly snug on the carriageway next to the Allotments - I think the base of the bushes / shrubs has overgrown in the first place, so the problem may not go away until they are cut back from the base, not only trimmed at higher levels.

I'll see if I notice people still driving partly onto the opposing carriageway and update then - I encourage the other person who commented on this issue to do the same.

  • Ok, I've just followed both a car and a bus in the direction of the Airbus site along Charlton Road and still, both felt forced to drive partly onto the opposing carriageway. This is still dangerous! Please address ASAP!
