Blocked road gully

Reported via mobile in the Gully/Drainage category anonymously at 13:29, Sun 15 November 2020

Sent to Bristol City Council less than a minute later

This road gully is blocked even though I clear the leaves regularly. This takes all of the discharge from the road for many yards up the hill and results in flooding of the road outside of 25 Redland Grove. The modified pavement kerb outside of 102 Redland Road just results in a leaf dam. This is a major problem in storm conditions.

  • The attached photo 6249 illustrated what happens in heavy rain. The leaves form a dam at the kerb and block the road gully that is beneath them. The resulting water floods onto the pavement and then into the Redland Grove road gutter and eventually forms in a large pond outside of my house at 25 Redland Grove as the leaves block the Redland Grove gullies. This is a significant danger to traffic. For the past 40 odd years I have been clearing the road gullies of leaves in Redland Grove but age is now limiting my activities and I cannot always anticipate when storms will occur. For several months the road gully outside of 102 Redland Road (buried under the leaves) has been silted up and does not function. I have reported this on street wise but no action has yet been taken. However clearing this gully will not resolve the problem as it will simply block with leaf build up because of the kerb dam. The solution is to realign the Redland Road kerb along the white line road marking shown in photo 6260 to the extremity of the pavement protrusion. This will enable the rainwater and leaves to be carried across the junction with Redland Grove and discharge equally down Redland Road and Redland Grove. A repositioned road gully should be provided at this junction outside of 102 Redland Road to replace the existing. A major task I know but one that has been caused by the misguided work previously undertaken.

  • Although the Council have kept this road gully free of leaves and debris at road level it is blocked with debris internally. There has been standing water over the gully grating today which has still not drained in over 4 hours despite being entirely clear at road level.
