Bollard damaged but lack of cycling contra-flow paint markings

Reported via desktop in the Iluminated Bollard category anonymously at 17:12, Tuesday 1 June 2021

Sent to Bristol City Council less than a minute later

Road surface redressing has removed the cycling contraflow. The route from north Bristol with the link on the bottom of Elton Road is a major cycling route. I was almost hit by a car coming up Elton Road because of parked car covering what should be the cycling contraflow. Some temporary solution such as bollards should have been erected as the lack of anything means drivers presume cycle users are using the road in contra flow illegally and some aim towards you as happened today to try to terrify you off the road. In the accompanying phot it shows that pavement parking which also covers where the cycle contra-flow should be is forcing pedestrians (including the Royal Mail staff to walk down the centre of the road. Please put back the contra-flow cycle lane marking and double yellow lines ASAP or some temporary bollards. Cycle users and pedestrians are at heightened risk of injury while the street is being misused by motorists (moving and parked).

  • The bollard at the top of the one way part of Elton Road was removed by vandals during the early hours of 4th June. This has added to the impact of lack of road markings since resurfacing

  • Illuminated bollard still missing 20th June and all contraflow markings still missing leading to rogue parking in cycle track which is the Southmead Quietway. Cyclists still being forced into oncoming speeding traffic

  • Still current as of 30 June. This issue should be given priority as serious injury could be caused to a cyclist trying to legitimately use the contraflow coming into conflict with an oncoming vehicle who may not be expecting to see them.
