Complaint about signage on north bound Whiteladies Road at junction St Paul's Road
Reported via desktop in the Road Signage category anonymously at 21:40, Tue 5 October 2021
Sent to Bristol City Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 3044519.
Why is there no-turn signs on the traffic lights on the other three approaches to this junction but not a no-turn-left sign on the traffic lights north on Whiteladies Road approaching St Paul's Road. This means there is no clear indication of a no-left turn. The white on blue directional arrows are confusing in that white on blue arrows usually mean one way. Although white on blue arrows on circle are directional signs, in this case these are on both traffic lights therefore both lanes are being given directional signs and that means the right side sign is indicating to drive on the wrong side of the road. Although there is a no-turn-left sign earlier on this road, it is on the other side and to see this and also comprehend it's detail requires undue attention to the road in front. A road with a 20 mile per hour speed limit where cars are often surrounded by cycles, e-scooters and mopeds. This sign therefore assumes a car driver to be happening to be looking in the air on an opposite pavement (not expected from someone driving with due diligence). I am a seasoned driver and always adhere to all signage and speed limits in Bristol but this is clumsy road signage and from my experience, an accident and injury is likely. Now that Bristol City Council is aware of this situation it will no doubt mitigate risk to road users and take action to improve the signage at this junction by placing a no-left turn sign on the traffic light in question.

The signage on the signal heads for the northbound traffic on Whiteladies Road is done to keep it as simple as possible and not overload the driver with unnecessary information especially when as you say drivers are worrying about other road users around them. The prescribed movement arrow (white arrow on a blue background) along with the green arrow clearly show the driver that they can only go ahead rather than having a cluttered signal head with the two banned turned movement signs you are requesting. The alignment of the side roads as well as the AHEAD ONLY road markings all subtlety point the driver to the prescribed ahead only road movement.
