Damaged paving slabs in front of Castlemead
Reported via mobile in the Pavements category anonymously at 18:53, Wed 22 June 2022
Sent to Bristol City Council less than a minute later
On the stretch of pavement in front of Castlemead can be found a number of raised and rocking paving slabs. This is an issue that has been reported of a number of times over the last 4 - 5 years, and even though some very small work has been done to relay paving slabs here, there are still a number of slabs that need attention. Majority of rocking and raised slabs have been marked in white paint and have been so for the past year, however these ones in question have still not been relayed, nor have a number of other unmarked slabs within the immediate area. Many pedestrians have tripped as a result of these problem paving slabs, including myself.

At approximately 09.45 on Wednesday 19th October 2022, my wife and I were walking along Castlemead pedestrian area towards Lower Castle Street in Bristol. We both turned left along Lower Castle Street near to its junction with Penn Street and Broad Weir. My wife was slightly behind me at this stage. I heard her cry out and turned to find that she had fallen on the uneven slabbing in that area was was bleeding heavily from a head wound. Looking around at the scene to try to find a reason for the incident it became clear that the paving slabs were broken and uneven, sticking up and were a trip hazard. Immediately after the fall I took photographs which clearly show the defects in the pavement. Together with passers-by, including a local Doctor, we were able to stem the bleeding and provide first aid. Due to the severity of the injuries were were advised to attend A&E at Bristol Royal Infirmary. A local man called a taxi which took us both to the hospital where we arrived at approximately 10.30.am. As a direct result of this incident my wife sustained a severe laceration to her head above the left eye, she also sustained a fracture to her left elbow both of which obviously needed treatment. We were discharged from hospital later the same day at approx. 3.30.pm.

Has anything happened on this? On Sat 10th December I stopped to help a lady who was walking a few metres in front of me. She tripped on one of the multiple extremely uneven paving slabs and smashed her face as she fell. She continued on shakily with light concussion and severely bruised cheek bones and planned eye to seek medical attention from her local hospital. This large area of paving is very hazardous needs rectifying before anyone is more seriously injured.
