Beauty Spot and National Event Venue or Traveller Site?

Reported via desktop in the Obstruction category anonymously at 19:34, Thursday 14 July 2022

Sent to Bristol City Council less than a minute later

My 11 year old daughter is becoming scared of the people living in vans as they are unaccountable and often seem high. Moreover, how are we maintaining the Downs as a venue for national events when this image, as seen so often, is now the norm? I want events at the Downs, because it attracts funding and support. However, how long before people gravitate to other venues, and private schools for that matter, because the Downs is now famous as a 'site' amongst traveller communities. At the very least, charge an overnight camping fee for facilities (where are these people toileting?) or to develop a bespoke site or homeless shelters where travellers can be properly supported.

  • A new enquiry has been raised for this issue.

  • My daughter saw a lady from one of the caravans “toileting” 2 metres away. She also saw another lady walking around topless. She cycles past on her way to school. I believe she has the right to feel safe and respected as she travels to and from school. The number of permanent caravans there now is a worrying trend. They are being towed to the downs and left there as a permanent feature. They aren’t hooked up to vehicles. They are just left there with the seeming intent to stay there. The Downs has age old protection rights. I don’t understand how this is being allowed to persist and even worsen. We need to urgently find a solution so this community can love with dignity and facilities while residents and visitors can enjoy the Downs as they are intended.

  • Concerned that the tourist coaches have nowhere to park as the lane is blocked up with permanent vans on “their site” not “our downs”.

How easy is it for a paedophile to infiltrate this group, abduct one of the very many school children passing daily and disappear? And what are you doing to reassure local parents? How traceable are they? How traceable are they? When a wealthy well connected foreign private school pupil goes missing, what are you going to tell the community and their parents?
