Overflowing Manhole in Carriageway

Reported via mobile in the Flooding/Gully/Drainage category anonymously at 12:11, Fri 10 November 2023

Sent to Bristol City Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 5196608.

Third time this year I have reported this, and several times in preceding years! Still not resolved. Why not? It’s a pretty simple problem to understand. After periods of heavy rain, the obviously blocked drainage system, fills up and spills out around the manhole cover. It’s in the main carriageway of the road and vehicles passing over it cause a loud clunk, implying that the pressure of water is actually lifting the cover. Potentially an accident waiting to happen! Whenever the contractors come out to check after my reports, it’s invariably after it hasn’t rained for a while so it’s not overflowing. They presumably tick the no problem or issue fixed box and bill the council. They need to actually investigate where/what the blockage/cause of the problem is and resolve it once and for all.

  • A month on, this issue has not been fixed and it is overflowing with today's rain. Someone rather bluntly suggested it's the responsibility of Wessex Water (is this actually the case?), so I also reported to them via their online reporting system, but no action or acknowledgement from them either. Whose responsibility actually is it, and why do they not resolve the issue?
