Double yellow lines have not been replaced in Wapping Road
Reported via desktop in the General highways enquiry category anonymously at 19:49, Thu 5 June 2025
Sent to Bristol City Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7668442.
Wapping Road was re-surfaced some weeks ago. The double yellow lines that have been there for years have not been reinstated. Consequently, coaches, vans and cars are being parked along the road, which has 3-way traffic lights at the junction with Commercial Road and Cumberland Road. So cars queuing for the traffic lights block the oncoming carriageway due to parked vehicles all day.

I have just been outside and taken a photo which shows the problem of not having had the double yellow lines replaced after resurfacing Wapping Road, and the 3-way traffic lights at the end of the road

Due to the oncoming traffic lane being blocked because of parked and queuing vehicles on the outgoing lane, motorists are now using the cycleway/footpath to drive down Wapping Road. This is obviously a dangerous manoeuvre for cyclists and pedestrians using the cycleway. The double yellow flashes put on the pavement weeks ago to indicate double yellow lines after re-surfacing have now almost disappeared due to rain. Please could this problem be fixed a.s.a.p? Thank you

I've seen cars go up the wrong side of the road to go around the parked cars and have had to force bikes off of the road who are travelling in the correct direction with the right of way. It is hard to see around the parked cars with the temporary lights and oncoming vehicles. This has been over 5 weeks since the road was needlessly resurfaced.

This is also a hazard for pedestrians crossing by the Louisiana as it’s harder to see gaps in oncoming traffic with the long line of cars in the way. Also with some drivers veering into the cycle/pedestrian lane, there may be an accident.

There are regularly cars parked all along the road. This is particularly problematic with the temporary traffic lights as it is often impossible to pass and I have had to drive on the pavement - both to get through and to avoid causing a bottleneck behind me. Dangerous and should not be necessary.

15th June 2025: this issue is still ongoing and is compromising the safety of everyone travelling on Wapping Road. Many cyclists choose not to use the cycle lane on Wapping Road, preferring the carriageway. The attached photo shows an example of this and how northbound cyclists are now in a much more dangerous situation as they face southbound vehicles sharing the same narrow width of carriageway. This is due to the vehicles parked on the east side of the road because of the absence of the double yellow lines. The southbound vehicles now have very poor visibility from the Challoner Court junction and motorists cannot see the temporary traffic lights ahead. They have no option but to proceed on the opposite side of the road to face unseen vehicles travelling northbound. There is very little queuing capacity southbound at the traffic lights with space for one or two vehicles. The parked vehicles are causing much confusion but above all they are creating a significant safety issue for all modes of transport. Please reinstate the double yellow lines as a matter of urgency.

People are posting on Reddit about trying to park here for free. This is clearly an ongoing issue and if other locals start sharing that it’s a good free parking spot (but ignore the risk to residents and passing traffic or pedestrians) then this shows how bad the problem has become. BCC, please act on this urgently!

This problem is becoming a complete nightmare. Does no-one from BCC check after road work has been done? It's obvious that Wapping Road is missing the double yellow lines which were there before the re-surfacing SIX WEEKS ago. There are sprayed yellow double flashes on the pavements (put there before the re-surfacing to show the existence of double yellow lines), but the rain has almost washed them away now. PLEASE BCC sort this problem out before some is badly hurt. It's dangerous to leave the situation like this

17th June 2025: At approximately 7.10pm I drove from Challoner Court turning left into Wapping Road. With very poor visibility due to cars parked the entire length of the east carriageway between Challoner Court and The Louisiana, I had to drive on the opposite side of the road to reach the temporary traffic lights. At the lights there was space for one vehicle to queue. As I waited on a red light, a taxi travelling southbound on Wapping Road behind me misread the scene and drove past me and also past the red traffic signal. A motorcycle following them also did the same. Thankfully both the driver and rider realised what they had done before proceeding into the "live" lanes of Commercial Road and Cumberland Road. They stopped short of travelling onwards. Clearly this is a safety concern. I do not believe either motorist intended to run the red light, they misread the situation due to the poor visibility and unusual, unsafe, arrangement. I urge you to reinstate the yellow lines as soon as possible please, before one of these near misses becomes a collision. Also, I wish to note that the residents of and visitors to Challoner Court, when travelling by road, have no option but to exit via Wapping Road. Whilst I am sure many of us use our vehicles as little as possible, some trips are not possible by other modes of transport. So we cannot avoid the current issue by choosing another route. This issue is also a safety concern for all road users.
