Shetland Road entrance to the Trym Valley Parkway, Bristol

Reported via Android in the General litter category anonymously at 18:54, Monday 12 January 2026

Sent to Bristol City Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8675563.

The entrance to the Trym Valley Parkway at Shetland Road has been in a neglected condition for a significant period of time. The area is heavily overgrown and contains an ongoing accumulation of litter. This location forms part of a busy pedestrian route, regularly used by members of the public travelling to and from Southmead Hospital, as well as local residents accessing the Trym Valley green corridor. The current condition raises several concerns: Statutory cleanliness obligations: Under Section 89 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, local authorities have a duty to ensure that land under their control is kept clear of litter and refuse. The persistent build-up of litter at this entrance suggests this duty is not currently being met. Environmental and biodiversity impact: Litter within an established green corridor poses a risk to wildlife and conflicts with the duty under the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 (Section 40), which requires public authorities to have regard to the purpose of conserving biodiversity. Public safety and access: Overgrown vegetation restricts visibility and narrows access at a key entrance point used daily by hospital staff, patients, and visitors, increasing risk and reducing the sense of safety. Public realm and long-term neglect: As a gateway to a valued public green space, the condition of this entrance gives the impression of long-term neglect and detracts from the surrounding area. I have used an image from Google Maps solely to indicate the precise location of the entrance. Requested action: Removal of accumulated litter Cutting back and management of overgrown vegetation Inclusion of this entrance within a routine inspection and maintenance schedule Addressing this would bring the site back into line with statutory duties, protect the local environment, and improve a well-used pedestrian route serving Southmead Hospital and the wider community.

Note: This has been submitted as a parks issue but may need the involvement of multiple departments.
