Make Sutherland Place one way (southward)

Reported via iOS in the Request for works on my street category anonymously at 09:12, Thursday 29 January 2026

Sent to Bristol City Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8792703.

My family have lived on Sutherland place for over 20 years, in which we have witnessed many accidents, collisions and altercations. Often these are caused by cars, vans and even scaffolding lorries attempting to climb the very steep narrow hill, to then be met with oncoming traffic.

We would like to propose that this steep dangerous hill is made one-way with traffic descending, for the following reasons:

Due to the original cobble stones, car wheels skid and spin easily when cars climb from a standstill. This causes vehicles to get stuck on an almost daily basis.

We sometimes have to move our parked cars or drivers are forced to reverse down the narrow hill. Wing mirrors are routinely knocked and cars scraped.

The worst cases involve large vans and scaffolding lorries completely blocking the road for hours as their loads prevent them from achieving a safe hill start.

This is not simply a congestion issue but one of safety. My mother lives on the street and is a blue badge holder. The disabled bay is constantly used as a passing space, as it’s at the neck of hill where it narrows to one lane. We are concerned for her safety as cars skid trying to negotiate the incline.

There are also small children living on the street and a primary school at the bottom on Worrall Road. In wet and icy conditions the blockages are especially dangerous with drivers struggling to keep control.

The junction of Sutherland & Belgrave is particularly problematic, especially when vehicles attempt to turn right with limited visibility of this very busy road.

Since Covid we are experiencing a lot more delivery drivers which has further amplified the problem.

We believe that a one-way system (descending southwards) would reduce the frequency of accidents, blockages and risk to pedestrians.

Please could fellow residents share their experiences and help us build a body of evidence?
